Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari destinations, located just a 4–5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam along the highway to Zambia. Often called the “little Serengeti of the South,” Mikumi is part of the Southern Safari Circuit and is a perfect introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife for first-time visitors, weekend travelers, and those with limited time.
Mikumi’s open grasslands, scattered acacia trees, and floodplains are home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 400 bird species. The park’s Mkata floodplain is especially scenic and ideal for wildlife photography.
Due to its proximity to the city, Mikumi is an excellent option for short safaris, family trips, and educational tours. It also serves as a gateway to deeper southern adventures in Ruaha and Nyerere National Parks. With decent roads and good accommodation options, it offers a comfortable yet wild experience.
Dry months offer the best wildlife viewing, while greener seasons bring fewer crowds, vibrant landscapes, and unique sightings. Each time of year offers a different but rewarding experience.
