Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the wildest safari destinations in Africa. Covering over 30,000 square kilometers in the Southern Safari Circuit, this vast and unspoiled wilderness is celebrated for its raw beauty, remote location, and outstanding game viewing — without the crowds of the north.
Nyerere is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and over 400 bird species. The Rufiji River, one of Tanzania’s largest waterways, meanders through the park, creating a rich ecosystem ideal for boat safaris, walking safaris, and classic game drives. It’s one of the few places in East Africa where you can enjoy a combination of river and land safari experiences.
Because of its size and remoteness, Nyerere National Park offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path adventure, perfect for nature lovers, photographers, honeymooners, and seasoned safari-goers seeking solitude and raw nature.
Dry months offer the best wildlife viewing, while greener seasons bring fewer crowds, vibrant landscapes, and unique sightings. Each time of year offers a different but rewarding experience.
